The Best Merchant of Record Platforms in 2026: 7 Providers Compared
We compared seven merchant of record platforms on published fees, payout terms, payment methods and billing models — with every price checked against the provider's own pricing page in November 2026.
On this page
There is no single best merchant of record — there is a best one for your customers and your billing model. Paddle remains the default for B2B SaaS selling to the US and Europe. Dodo Payments leads on native metered billing. Lemon Squeezy and Polar suit digital products and developer tools. FastSpring and PayPro Global are built for negotiated enterprise deals. Waffo Pancake is built for individual developers and AI startups selling worldwide, with WeChat Pay at checkout and no company required to sign up.
This comparison is published by the Waffo Pancake team, and Waffo Pancake is one of the seven providers below. We list ourselves first because it is our blog; we have tried to describe every provider, including ourselves, using only what each one publishes. Public prices were checked on each provider's official pricing page on November 4, 2026. Sources are listed at the end.
- Headline rates cluster around 3.9%–5% plus $0.40–$0.50 per transaction, but surcharges for international cards (+1.5%) and subscriptions (+0.5%) can move the real cost by more than a full percentage point.
- Payout terms vary more than fees: from on-demand withdrawals to once-a-month payouts with a $100 minimum.
- Usage-based billing is now a standard request from AI products, and providers handle it in different ways — native meters, credit wallets, or dynamic pricing at checkout.
- Asian payment methods remain uneven across the market; WeChat Pay and Alipay are available at only a few providers.
- The cheapest provider on paper is not always the cheapest for you. Model your own average order value, customer mix and billing type before you choose.

How we evaluated these providers
We looked at five things. They mirror the due-diligence questions in our guide to choosing a merchant of record, which goes deeper on each.
- Legal and tax. Does the provider act as the legal seller and handle VAT, GST and sales tax for you? All seven do.
- Fees and payouts. The full fee schedule — not just the headline rate — plus how often you get paid, minimum payouts and payout fees.
- Payment methods. Which methods your buyers actually see at checkout, especially outside the US and Europe.
- Billing model. One-time purchases, subscriptions, trials, plan changes, and how usage-based pricing is handled.
- Eligibility. Who can sign up — companies only, or individual developers too — and how quickly you can go live.
We did not run paid transactions through every provider or test approval rates, and we have not included providers that are payment processors rather than merchants of record.

What you actually pay: a worked example
Headline rates are only the starting point. To compare like for like, we modeled one month for a typical subscription product:
- 1,000 subscription payments at $20 each ($20,000 in revenue)
- 40% of payments ($8,000) on international (non-US) cards
- No refunds, disputes, PayPal or currency conversion
| Provider | Calculation | Transaction fees | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waffo Pancake | 3.9% × $20,000 + 1,000 × $0.50 | $1,280 | 6.4% |
| Polar (Pro plan) | 3.8% × $20,000 + 1,000 × $0.40 + 1.5% × $8,000 + $20 plan | $1,300 | 6.5% |
| Dodo Payments | 4% × $20,000 + 1,000 × $0.40 + 1.5% × $8,000 + 0.5% × $20,000 | $1,420 | 7.1% |
| Paddle | 5% × $20,000 + 1,000 × $0.50 | $1,500 | 7.5% |
| Polar (Starter) | 5% × $20,000 + 1,000 × $0.50 + 1.5% × $8,000 | $1,620 | 8.1% |
| Lemon Squeezy | 5% × $20,000 + 1,000 × $0.50 + 1.5% × $8,000 + 0.5% × $20,000 | $1,720 | 8.6% |
FastSpring and PayPro Global are excluded because they do not publish standard rates.
This model covers base transaction fees only. It excludes payout and currency conversion fees, refund and dispute fees, failed-payment fees, and any negotiated pricing. Your numbers will shift with your average order value: the fixed per-transaction fee matters far more at $5 than at $100.
Payout terms
How fast you get paid affects cash flow as much as fees do, especially for small teams.
| Provider | Payout schedule | Minimum | Payout fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waffo Pancake | Each payment settles after 10 business days; withdraw any time after that, arriving in 1–3 business days | $10 | 1% |
| Paddle | Monthly, sent by the 15th | $100 | None from Paddle; bank fees may apply |
| Lemon Squeezy | Twice monthly, after a 13-day hold | $50 | Free to US banks; 1% to non-US banks |
| Polar | Manual withdrawals | Not published | Stripe payout fees (0.25% + $0.25, plus cross-border fees) |
| FastSpring | Twice monthly, after a 14-day settlement delay | $100 | 2.5% if payout currency differs from store currency |
Selling globally from Asia: indie developers and AI startups
Most merchant of record comparisons are written from a US or European point of view. If you build from Asia, or sell to Asian customers, a few things matter more than the headline rate.
Can you sign up as an individual? Many solo developers in Asia build and launch before they have a company — and some providers ask for months of processing history or a registered business before approving you. Waffo Pancake accepts individual developers, so you can start charging customers while your product is still finding its market.
Which wallets do your buyers use? Cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay work well in most markets. But if your customers include Chinese-speaking users, WeChat Pay and Alipay are often how they expect to pay. On this list, Waffo Pancake, FastSpring and PayPro Global offer WeChat Pay — and Waffo Pancake is the only one of the three with self-serve signup and a public price.
What do small orders cost? Many AI tools and apps sell low-priced credit packs and one-off top-ups. A fixed $0.50 fee is 10% of a $5 order. WeChat Pay on Waffo Pancake carries no fixed per-transaction fee, which keeps these one-time purchases viable. WeChat Pay covers one-time payments; recurring subscriptions are charged to cards.
Can you price in local currencies? Waffo Pancake lets you set prices in JPY, HKD and CNY alongside USD, EUR and GBP, so buyers see a price that makes sense to them.
More local wallets, including in Southeast Asia and Japan, are coming soon to Waffo Pancake.
What changed for merchants of record in 2026
Usage-based pricing went mainstream. AI products rarely fit a flat monthly plan. Providers now compete on how they handle token quotas, credit packs and overage — through native meters, credit wallets or dynamic pricing at checkout. If this is your model, read what breaks when you sell AI by the token before you choose.
More apps moved to web checkout. As app store rules opened up, more mobile apps started offering web checkout alongside in-app purchases. A merchant of record makes that practical, because it handles the tax that the app stores used to handle for you.
Stripe entered the merchant of record market. Stripe now offers Stripe Managed Payments as its own merchant of record solution, and Lemon Squeezy, which Stripe acquired in 2024, is pointing users toward it. Expect more consolidation and more feature overlap between processors and merchants of record.
Before you sign up
Whichever provider you shortlist, ask the same hard questions: who is the legal seller, what does the full fee schedule look like at your average order value, and can your customers' stored cards move if you ever switch. Our merchant of record due-diligence checklist covers all of them. If you are new to the model, start with what a merchant of record is.
Is Waffo Pancake right for you?
Waffo Pancake belongs on your shortlist if any of these describe you:
- You are an individual developer without a registered company and want to start selling now.
- You are building an AI product and need flexible billing, such as subscriptions with included quotas plus credit packs.
- Your customers include Chinese-speaking users who prefer to pay with WeChat Pay.
- You want transparent pricing: 3.9% + $0.50 per transaction, with no monthly or setup fees.
3.9% + $0.50 per successful transaction, no monthly fees, and no company required to start selling.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best merchant of record in 2026?
There is no single best one; it depends on who you sell to and how you bill. For B2B SaaS selling mainly to North America and Europe, Paddle is the established choice. For digital products with license keys, Lemon Squeezy. For developer tools, Polar. For native metered billing, Dodo Payments. For enterprise software with negotiated terms, FastSpring or PayPro Global. For individual developers and AI startups selling worldwide, including to Chinese-speaking buyers who pay with WeChat Pay, Waffo Pancake.
Which merchant of record is the cheapest?
On published headline rates, Waffo Pancake (3.9% + $0.50) is the lowest among the providers here that require no monthly plan. But headline rates hide surcharges: several providers add 1.5% for international cards and 0.5% for subscriptions. On a modeled month of 1,000 subscription payments at $20, with 40% on international cards, base transaction fees ranged from $1,280 to $1,720 across the providers with public pricing.
Which merchant of record supports usage-based billing?
Dodo Payments and Lemon Squeezy advertise usage-based billing on their pricing pages; Dodo adds a 0.5% surcharge to those transactions. Waffo Pancake supports AI pricing through subscriptions with included quotas plus dynamic pricing at checkout, which covers overage charges and variable-size credit packs. Ask any provider how it handles prepaid credits, mid-period overage and refunds against consumed usage.
Can an individual developer use a merchant of record without a company?
Some providers accept individuals; check each provider's onboarding requirements before you build. Waffo Pancake accepts individual developers without a registered company, which is one of the main reasons solo founders in Asia choose it.
Is a merchant of record the same as a payment gateway?
No. A payment gateway or processor moves money on your behalf, but you remain the legal seller and are responsible for sales tax, VAT and GST in every country you sell to. A merchant of record becomes the legal seller: it collects and remits tax, issues invoices in its own name, and handles chargebacks and compliance.
Can I switch merchant of record later?
Yes, but plan for it. Because the merchant of record is the legal seller, switching changes the name on your customers' invoices and bank statements. The hardest part is usually whether stored card credentials can move between providers; if they cannot, active subscribers must re-enter their cards.
Waffo Pancake is a Merchant of Record platform for developers and solo founders — we handle global payments, tax, and compliance across 173 countries so you can focus on building. Our team writes these guides from hands-on payments and billing experience.
